For some reason Bart wasn't filling out or growing. He was so scrawny.
People in our family just weren't scrawny. He was still eating like a horse so where was all that food going? I had a nagging
feeling that something was not right but he wasn't really symptomatic. He was in the process of potty training and used every
toilet that we passed. I thought he was really interested in the potty training. He was rewarded with M & M's if he used
the potty instead of his pants. We took him out to Dairy Queen but he got sick every time we went. What is wrong with this
kid that he gets sick from ice cream?
We also noticed that he was very thirsty. No wonder he wanted to use
all those bathrooms. It was the middle of June and very hot so little kids need to drink a lot. It must be normal.
I remembered a friend's dog who displayed similar symptoms, ravenous
hunger, thirst, lots of trips outside. The dog was later diagnosed with diabetes.
Since my husband, Alan, was a physician, he had access to the
lab at the hospital where his office was located. I expressed my fears to him and had Bart pee in a cup and asked Alan to
take it to the lab. My worst fears were realized when he called me later and told me the urine was full of sugar.
